PayScale.com: Getting Creative with Your Career: 5 Art Jobs that Pay
Have you ever considered a career in the arts? For many, the idea of letting your creative juices flow may sound like more play than work. The reality is,
there are many artist jobs that can provide a stable and rewarding career as well.
Here are five in-demand art careers and what they pay:
Animator – Animators typically create special effects, animation, or other visual images using film, video, computers, or other electronic tools and media for
use in products or creations, such as computer games, movies, music videos, and commercials. Many of these jobs will require at least a technical degree if
not a formal 4-year university degree. Common animator salaries range from $29-93,000 annually.
Art Director – Art directors formulate design concepts and presentation approaches, and direct workers engaged in art work, layout design, and copy
writing for visual communications media, such as magazines, books, newspapers, and packaging. They can work in either a corporate, non-profit or
educational setting and common art director salaries range anywhere from $35-$86,000 annually.
Graphic Artist/Designer – Graphic designers design and/or create graphics to meet specific commercial or promotional needs, such as packaging,
displays, or logos. They may use a variety of mediums to achieve artistic or decorative effects. As with an animator, a technical degree is usually required.
Typical graphic artist salaries range from $18-74,000 annually.
Art Teacher – Art teachers work in either an elementary, secondary or post-secondary education setting and teach courses including fine and applied art,
such as painting and sculpture, or design and crafts. A teaching degree from a traditional university is generally required and typical art teacher salaries
range from $21-$65,000 annually.
Fine Artist – Fine artists fall into the category of painters, illustrators and/or sculptors and produce original artwork or illustrations. As many are self-
employed, a formal education in fine arts is not always required. Typical fine artist salaries range from $18-98,000 annually.
Whether you choose to work by computer or by hand, in paint or by clay, a job in the arts can be a rewarding opportunity to practice and perfect your
creative ability while earning a substantial paycheck.
